K2 Base Camp Trek: Preparation, Route, Permits & What to Expect
Everything you need to know before stepping foot on the Baltoro Glacier: fitness preparation, government NOC permits, day-by-day pacing, and safety protocols.

Why Trek to K2 Base Camp?
Known worldwide as the ultimate alpine journey, the K2 Base Camp trek takes adventurers deep into the Karakoram wilderness. Unlike Himalayan treks that pass through terraced farming villages, the Baltoro is pure untamed geology — a 63 km moving glacier surrounded by granite towers like Trango, Cathedral, and Masherbrum.
Government Permits & NOC Rules
Because the Baltoro Glacier is located in a restricted border zone (Central Karakoram National Park), foreign travelers must trek through a licensed Pakistani tour operator with an official Tourism License and Alpine Club of Pakistan clearance. Indus Adventure handles all Ministry of Interior permits, liaison officer paperwork, and park entry cards.
The Route from Askole to Concordia
The trek starts at Askole (3,048 m), the last inhabited village in Baltistan. Over 7 to 8 days, you progress through Korophon, Paiju, Urdukas, and Goro II before arriving at Concordia (4,600 m). From Concordia, an early morning trek brings you directly to K2 Base Camp (5,150 m) and the poignant Art Gilkey Memorial.
Physical Fitness & Acclimatization
Trekkers should be capable of walking 6 to 8 hours daily over uneven moraine, scree, and ice with a daypack. Regular cardiovascular training, stair climbing with weighted packs, and leg endurance exercises for 3 to 4 months beforehand are strongly advised.
Safety, Porters & High Altitude Health
Our expeditions include pulse oximeter monitoring twice daily, a pressurized hyperbaric bag or Gamow bag if required, emergency satellite communications, and certified mountain first-aid guides. We strictly adhere to fair porter treatment guidelines established by the Alpine Club.
